  • Assignment #3 Question 4

    4. For question #2, what did you do differently from the original post? Please outline, explain and justify what you changed & why. Essentially, what did you learn from this new topic and what did you change and why. (8 Marks)Compared to my original introductory post, there are a couple of things I did differently, firstly I kept in mind the F-Pattern, using headlines and justifications for them, unlike my original post which was one long paragraph that did not necessarily follow the pattern.(Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 33, 57, 58, 59.)  In my new post, I made sure to make it look good by including images, along with captivating headings, and short sentences, making sure the most crucial information about Vending Glow is placed at the top, I used these techniques based on what I learned in how users scan websites, (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 45, 46, 57-59.) this gives readers an easier time to scan and read through my content and quickly find whatever they were looking for in the first place.(Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 18, 62.) I also made sure to insert plain english language into my content, because in my original post the content was long, over-explaining things and I changed it by shortening it, using words that my target audience understands and imply daily, while being ,more direct and not going off track or having irrelevant information. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 22, 41-42, 53.) I questioned and paid attention to every word I stated and eliminated anything that was not relevant or did not make any sense. I kept the most important and crucial points that strictly explain my business and what it offers. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 70.) This makes it easy and clear to understand and perceive.(Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 3.)  I paid a lot of attention to my target audience, how they would engage with this content, what questions they might have and the way they would read it and receive it and also how would my audience use it and when.(Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 20 29.) People would want to use these products at the gym, or around nightlife bars and clubs, if they are traveling or just going out with their friends downtown. I also made sure the post is organized and appealing to people, adding images that match my content, to ensure people have a visual in their head not only information, I also focused on spacing to make it look better and make it easily scannable for people. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 57-59, 71, 75.) In conclusion, I learned that making these kinds of posts are not just about writing or having content, it is also about it being presentable, easy to scan through, find, relate to and engage with. My content is shorter, simpler, clearer, organized, looks better and effective.

  • Assignment #3 Question 3

    3. For question #2, explain how your new post successfully addresses the three main objectives of Plain English writing as discussed in class. Provide a detailed breakdown of each objective. (9 Marks)

My new introductory post successfully addresses the three main objectives of Plain English writing which are clear, concise and correct. The first thing I focused on was using very simple, clear and straight-to-the-point Plain English language that will be clear and easy to read and understand for most people. I avoided using over complex words that can confuse people, and explained short and clear what Vending Glow has to offer and what it is about. I used clear headings that explain the main points or questions of what is written below, for example “What is in our Vending machines” or “Where can you find us” this avoids any misunderstandings or false assumptions.

My post has concise content and writing, because it keeps it on topic, strictly on what users might be looking for, and does not have irrelevant information. I avoided using a lot of writing and unnecessary content. I tried including mostly bullet points that explain themselves so viewers do not have to read a lot, and they can scan the information just by taking a look at it. This does not waste reader’s time, keeping it short, simple and concise, along with them receiving the information they were looking for and understanding what the blog and business is about.

The third and last main point the introductory post has is that it is correct. This post is correct because it has true accurate content, spelled and structured right that is directed to my target audience, using terms they would understand and engage with. It states all the main products and brands the vending machines offer, some locations you can find the vendings at, it answers all the main points, keeping it straight forward but also not missing any important or relevant information about Vending Glow.

In conclusion, this updated version of my introductory post does have the three main objectives of Plain English language, because it is clear, concise and correct, with relevant information that is easy to remember, read and understand, especially for Vending Glow’s target audience.

    a.  Describe one specific technique you used to improve readability in your revised version and explain why it is effective. (4 Marks)

One specific technique I used to improve readability in my revised version of my introductory post was using headings along with short sentences of writing and including bullet points from my older version to simplify it. I avoided writing long big paragraphs that do not follow an F-pattern and aren’t necessary for the post. I included sections to state the main points on what the content will be about and answer and questions, avoid any confusions like “Where you can find us” and “Why choose us” and below I used bullet points to answer those statements and list the main key elements.

This technique is effective because it simplifies and states all the main points and factors of my business, making it simpler to scan through the content and not put a lot of effort in trying to read and understand the content, while following the F-pattern. This also keeps the content on point and it benefits people who do not enjoy reading a lot to find out anything they need. Finding out the main points and important information will not be hard at all for readers, it fulfills readers needs and answers their questions. I avoided using a large amount of texts because of my target audience being young adults, who usually do not engage with a lot of writing and do not like wasting their time looking at unnecessary overwhelming information. I also kept all the content true, avoided using false information or making something seem better or different than it actually is. This technique definitely improves readability, keeping the text straight-to-the-point, organized and easy to navigate.

    b. What was the most challenging aspect of applying the F-Pattern and Plain English writing principles? How did you overcome it? (5 Marks)

The most challenging aspect of applying the F-pattern and plain english writing when writing principles I had to overcome was avoiding writing a lot and reducing information from my original post, while keeping all the main points and all the important factors. I also made sure to include important headings along with small sentences to follow them and back them up. I overcame these challenging aspects by focusing strictly on the most relevant parts of my texts, and about my business. The original informatory post consisted of one big paragraph talking about my vending machines, products and answering questions, using more complicated words and over-explaining content. The updated version is shorter, on-point, following the F-pattern while using plain english writing principles as well. The bullet points are for backing up my headings, and giving readers exactly what they look for, while keeping everything organized, using pictures as well for style and making it easier to keep the content clear, concise and correct while making sure all the crucial factors and descriptions were mentioned to readers.

The more I was writing, the easier it got to overcome this challenging aspect and it made me look at the content with a different perspective, focusing on what people want to read, including my target audience.

  • Assignment #3 Question1

    1. We spoke about Plain English writing in class. Please answer the following in detail:

    a. How would you explain to someone what “Plain English writing” is? (4 Marks)

Plain English writing is straight to the point, helping people understand your content fast and clearly. It avoids using big words that people might not understand, making it relatable and easier for people to read or process any information. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 41-42, 16) They also engage better with it and remember it for longer than information that is too context for them.(Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 14, 17) Plain english writing is a website or document in english, that has these three factors to help readers: finding exactly what they need, use it to fulfill their purpose and understand it. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 18, 62) Knowing your audience, using common words, being concise, using pronouns and keeping your tone conversational, choosing strong verbs, using clear formats, like headings, lists, tables and infographics, reviewing your language to measure your success are all crucial steps in order to have a proper website or document consisting of plain english writing for your designated target audience and readers. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 20, 22, 39, 57-59) Using plain english writing will make your audience more likely to be engaged, pay attention and raise an interest in it. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 14) The key for plain english content is understanding your target audience, who they are, what they currently know, and what they need to know or find out. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 20, 29) In conclusion, Plain english writing saves readers time from reading an unnecessary amount of information, it is not using “dumb” words, but clear, concise and correct content that is time-effective, making sure readers obtain the information targeted to them, avoiding false unclear content that isn’t fully correct and concise. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 14, 70, 3, 21).

    b. What makes plain English writing different? (4 Marks)

Plain english writing is different in that it focuses more, making it easier for the readers to read and understand better rather than just how the writer writes, and their knowledge about it, using their own words and style. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 15, 20.)

Plain english writing is focused on giving clear over complex information, avoiding using over complicated words that the audience most likely will not know or understand unless it is a term that does not have other justifications or synonyms. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 22, 41, 42) It is simple but not overly simple and straight to the point, it delivers the main message instantly which is what most people like to see using language the targeted audience would typically use or engage with daily, which also leaves more space for other audiences to understand it. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 21, 20, 53) It also makes it different because it benefits readers in finding whatever they need, understand and use it. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 18, 62) In conclusion, Plain english writing is clear, concise and correct, avoiding lots of writing that does not get to the main point until the end, over-explaining and lots of details that people would not necessarily find interesting in, using short sentences, stating the main points, with proper organization and a clear voice. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 3, 53, 70, 45) The way it is presented is also a key factor to plain english writer, because organization that is effective for the audience is a need, placing the main points and most important factors at the beginning, using headlines or simple headings for people to automatically understand what the topic will be about instead of reading pages of text. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 45-46, 57-59)

    c. What is plain language writing for the web and in detail and in your own words, why is it important?(4 Marks)

Plain english language writing for the web is creating/writing content that your designated audience will understand right away the first time they read or even take a quick look at it. Using words people see or read everyday, short and clear sentences and properly organized, this helps readers and people clicking on the website, navigate easier, finding exactly what they need or what they look for, have an understanding of it and finally want to find out more.  Plain english language is made for websites because people would rather scan the information by quick headlines and short text, or flexboxes, bullet points etc. Plain english content is crucial for websites because it makes it accessible to everyone, including people who might struggle with spelling or reading, or that do not know the language super well, those with dyslexia it also improves customer interaction especially with information like headlines, CTA messages that are clear and express the main topics and points, and also answering questions people might have. This is very time-efficient, reducing confusion and avoids irrelevant information that would make readers want to exit the website or click on something else. This writing also builds and earns trust by having clear and delivering correct information instead of using irrelevant or information that would not help them at all, or false statements. In conclusion, plain english language is very important for the web, because the content is not just writing, it is backed up by facts, easily understandable, that the audience would engage with and use it, making it very effective for a website to get success and bring in even more readers. (Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing Quick recap (W25).pdf, all Slides)
